FLOW

Discover the Power of FLOW in Managing Depression

Flow is a depression treatment device that combines a tDCS headset with an in-app behavioural therapy program. When we experience depression, certain areas of our brain may become less active, leading to persistent sadness, a loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and changes in appetite and sleep patterns.

The Flow headset applies a gentle electrical current to reactivate brain activity and alleviate depressive symptoms through transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS).

All you need to do, is contact our medical team, book your appointment at SOZO Brain Center and start using FLOW.

Flow has been shown to deliver fast and effective relief of depressive symptoms, including improved mood, sleep and focus.

If you have been diagnosed with depression, Flow might be suitable for you, as it can be used alongside antidepressants or talking therapy, for better and faster results.

Scientific Research

Patients are being offered an innovative treatment for depression, without the side effects of anti-depressant drugs, as part of a pioneering project.

Led by the Research and Innovation (R&I) team at Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT), the project uses a ‘Flow’ headset to deliver transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) treatment, which is backed by over 30 years of research and clinical evidence to show it is safe and effective.

Patients use Flow themselves at home for 30 minutes, five times per week for three weeks. After the initial three-week period, patients usually reduce this to three sessions per week for three weeks, they can then stop using or continue to use for as long as required.

FAQs

The Flow headset has been carefully designed and thoroughly tested by experts. It is CE-certified and meets all European and UK regulations for medical devices. The technology used, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), has been employed in clinical settings for decades, with its safety and efficacy evaluated in numerous clinical trials.

The Flow headset utilizes a gentle technique called transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) to enhance brain function, as it specifically targets a brain area linked to mood, focus, and sleep. Depression can occur when this area is underactive, affecting these functions. Flow sends a small and safe electric current to the affected area via electrodes on the forehead, increasing its activity over time.

The time it takes to notice improvement with Flow varies by individual, depending on the cause of the depression. It can take up to 10 weeks to fully realize its effects, though many users report noticeable improvement within 3 weeks. The Flow app helps track progress through weekly MADRS questionnaires, displaying results on a graph. Consistent use as per the treatment plan is essential for optimal results.

Flow's treatment schedule consists of two phases: the Activation Phase and the Strengthening Phase. The goal is to activate and strengthen neural networks in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, crucial for managing depression.
  • Activation Phase: 5 sessions per week for 3 weeks
  • Strengthening Phase: 2 sessions per week, ongoing
Each session lasts 30 minutes, plus a few minutes for preparation. While many users see improvement by the end of the three-week Activation Phase, it is recommended to use Flow for 10 weeks to gauge its effectiveness. If Flow is beneficial, continue for an additional 6 to 12 months to prevent relapse. Following the treatment plan closely yields the best results, and adjustments can be made with the help of our medical team.

Flow is certified for use only in individuals aged 18 and above who have been diagnosed with depression. It is not recommended for individuals under 18.
